Le château de SchönbrunnThe Palace is located in Hietzing, west of the Vienna. This remarkable Baroque ensemble and example of synthesis of the arts is placed on the World Heritage of Unesco since 1996. In 1548, a mansion was built under the leadership of Hermann Bayer, mayor of Vienna. Since 1569, Maximilian II of Habsburg takes possession of the Palace and will remain in the hands of his family until the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire in the early twentieth century. During the following centuries, the palace will undergo many architectural transformations. In 1642, the royal residence takes its current name (replacing Katterburg). According to the legend, the name comes from a hunting trip, during which Emperor Matthias allegedly found on its path "beautiful fountains" (Schöne Brunnen). In 1683, the castle is partially damaged by the Turkish invasions. Leopold I decided to restore it and calls the architect Johann Fischer von Erlach who performs the works in the early eighteenth century. Most of the current palace date from this period. The empress Marie-Therese still brings changes to the architect Pacassi in the second part of the eighteenth century. Napoleon has lived twice in the Palace in 1805 and 1809, making its military districts. |

In the nineteenth century, an emperor will leave its mark on Schoenbrunn, it is Franz Joseph I of Austria. He spent most of his life there and died in 1916. The castle was his summer residence (the Hofburg being the winter palace).Several pieces also keep the memory of his wife, Empress Elisabeth known as Sissi. The French gardens of the park were designed in 1695 by Jean Tréhet, a student of Le Nôtre. The park includes fake Roman ruins and an orangery. The summit of the park is occupied by the Gloriette Building, neo-classical style, designed by Ferdinand von Hohenberg, where there is a panoramic view of the castle and the city of Vienna. |
